A Mathematician's Apology

Description

Hardy's defence of pure mathematics, written in 1940 near the end of his career: why a mathematician's work is creative, why its value is aesthetic rather than useful, and what it means to have spent a life on it. Twenty-nine short sections, with Hardy's note on the criticisms of C. D. Broad and C. P. Snow at the end. This is the first edition (Cambridge University Press, 1940), Hardy's essay alone, without the Foreword added in 1967.
